  • North Thirty Five | N35° | Travel Japan

N35° (North Thirty Five) is an independent travel platform and creative studio exploring Japan through history, context, and thoughtful storytelling — with a particular focus on places beyond the standard Tokyo–Kyoto route.

We create editorial stories, cultural travel content, and immersive digital guides for curious travellers who want to explore Japan more independently and with more depth than simply checking off a list.

Japan is too often reduced to the same narrow circuit: the same cities, the same landmarks, and the same fast-moving recommendations shaped for algorithms rather than real depth. N35° exists as an alternative — slower, more considered, and more connected to the character of a place.

We focus on the layers that make a destination meaningful: history, atmosphere, local character, seasonal detail, and the stories that give a place its depth. The goal is not simply to tell people where to go, but to help them understand what they are seeing, why it matters, and why some of Japan’s most memorable travel experiences happen well outside its most overused itinerary.

N35° takes its name from the 35th parallel north — a line of latitude that runs through Tokyo and around the globe. It is a geographic reference, but also a symbolic one: connecting Japan with the rest of  the world.

That idea sits at the heart of everything N35° does. The platform exists to connect curious travellers from all around the world with a richer, more layered Japan — not just its most visited destinations, but its wider landscapes, regional cultures, and quieter places that rarely make it onto the mainstream map.

  • North Thirty Five | N35° | Travel Japan

N35° was founded by a digital marketer and creative strategist whose connection with Japan began through study programmes in 2019, and grew over the years into repeat visits and local friendships that opened up a deeper experience of the country.

She experienced the crowds, the famous landmarks, and the energy of Japan’s most popular destinations.. But she also experienced what lies beyond them.

Then a randomly picked up book changed everything — suddenly the map of Japan felt full of places waiting to be discovered. Edo period writers inspired journeys through Tohoku and beyond, where the experience of Japan felt different: remarkable scenery, deep history, extraordinary culture, amazing food, and not many international visitors.

That left one very simple thought: why are so many visitors still being funnelled into the same overcrowded corners of Japan, when all of this exists too?

N35° was born out of that question — and from the desire to help more visitors experience Japan more independently, and beyond the ‘golden route’.
