Ginzan Onsen is small, dramatic, and absolutely aware of its own cinematic power. Wooden ryokan line both sides of the Ginzan River. Gas lamps come on at dusk. Steam rises. And suddenly, the town turns into a very expensive-looking hallucination. But the fairytale version is only half the point. Ginzan began with silver. Before the yukata strolls, footbaths, and softly glowing bridges, this valley was tied to hard mining labour, mountain water, and a town that had to reinvent itself more than once. It is a real onsen town and one very compact street with a very high ratio of “wow” per square metre. So come for the aesthetic. Stay for the soak.
